Malchus and Joy
If Malchus were only lack, she would end in sadness.
Instead Jewish tradition links the completed kingdom with joy.
יִשְׂמַח יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּעֹשָׂיו בְּנֵי צִיּוֹן יָגִילוּ בְמַלְכָּם
“Let Israel rejoice in its Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King” (Psalms 149:2).
The joy is relational.
The kingdom recognises the King.
This is the happiness of Malchus: not possession, but belonging.
The ego asks:
What is mine?
Malchus asks:
To Whom do I belong?
The first question can never be fully satisfied.
The second can become infinite.
